Abelia

Abelia

Family: Caprifoliaceae

(Ab-elia: after Dr. Clark Abel, 1780-1826, physician and author on China)

'Bumblebee’

(A. longituba) We don’t know much about this plant but what we’ve seen has been impressive. It looks much like A. x grandiflora, but with large, foxglove-like, lavender-pink flowers. The bloom starts early and is very prolific. Originates from Europe. Available June

Zone 7?, 3 feet?, Fragrant, gr 1, Full sun Partial shade

Abelia chinensis

Fragrant white flowers followed by showy pink sepals that smother this fine plant from June until frost. A great plant for attacting butterflies. May behave like a perennial in the north but will grow back quickly and blooms on new wood. Available June. Zone 5, 4-6 feet, fragrant, gr 1, Full Sun, Partial shade

CONFETTIâ

(A. 'Conti' PP #8472) Festive pink, white and green foliage and white flowers. A branch sport of 'Sherwood', discovered by Flowerwood Nursery. Superb!

Zone 6, 3 feet, Fragrant, gr 1.5, Full sun Partial shade

'Edward Goucher'

(A. x grandiflora) Trumpet-like, lavender-purple flowers, May until frost. Glossy dark green foliage adds to its beauty and popularity as a hedging plant. Hybridized by Edward Goucher in 1911.

Zone 6, 3-5 feet, Fragrant, gr 1, Full sun Partial shade

GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY TM

Abelia x grandiflora 'minipan'

A bright golden variegated selection of ‘Compacta’. Colorful and compact and good stability.

Zone 6, 3 feet, gr 1,

SILVER ANNIVERSARY TM  -

(A. ‘Panache’ Distinct, clean silver to cream margined variegated foliage and white flowers. Discovered by Minier Nursery of France. Propagation prohibited, patent/trademark tag required. Available June.

Zone 6, 3 feet, gr 1,

'Little Richard'

(A. zanderi) A new dwarf cultivar with abundant white flowers and dark glossy leaves. New growth is an attractive bright red. Superb reblooming qualities. A branch sport of 'Sherwood' discovered by Richard Currin.

Zone 6, 2-3 feet, Fragrant, gr 1, Full sun Partial shade

mosanensis  Fragrant Abelia

A hardy, fragrant Abelia!!! We found this deciduous species in Latvia so we know it’s hardy. Wonderfully fragrant, rich pink flowers. The fragrance is better than a Lilac! The blooms adorn this plant from late May to early June. The glossy summer foliage turns an attractive orange-red in autumn. We have never seen any tip dieback on this plant even in years when the other Abelia cultivars are killed to the ground. Very exciting!

Zone 5 or hardier, 5-6 feet, Fragrant, gr 1, Full sun Partial shade

Abeliophyllum

White Forsythia

Family: Oleaceae

(Abelio-phy-llum: Abelia-like leaves)

Abeliophyllum distichum

Resembles a Forsythia in most respects, except for its white flowers and a shorter stature. Benefits from a hard pruning after flowering. Red fall color.

Zone 5(4), 3-5 feet, Fragrant, gr 1.5, Cutting, Full sun Partial shade

‘Roseum’

A very fine, soft pink flowered version of the above. Not a dark pink, but a pleasant soft pink, that in our opinion, is an improvement over the species. Available June

Zone 5(4), 3-5 feet, Fragrant, gr 1.5, Good for Cutting, Full Sun Partial Shade
