Buddleia davidii

Butterfly Bush

Family: Loganiaceae

(Buddle-ia: after Adam Buddle, English botanist)

Fast to finish and easy to sell! They're fragrant, colorful and they attract butterflies. Bold, long blooming flowers ignite an explosion of summer sales. Treat them like a perennial in the north; cut them back heavily in the spring for better flowering.

English Butterfly Series
A great new series of compact Buddleia developed by Elizabeth Keep of East Malling England. Her breeding goal was
to refine the habit of butterfly bush and she achieved her goal by creating well behaved, extra bushy plants that are roughly one third the size of typical davidii cultivars. You’ll love the way they look in containers and in gardens. Available June.

ADONIS BLUE
(B. davidii ‘Adokeep’)
Deep blue flowers of good size and fragrance on a compact plant. The propagation of, and or the sale of plant parts is prohibited without a license. Patent / trademark tag required. Zone 5, 4-5 ft,, gr 0.5,

PEACOCK
(B. davidii ‘Peakeep’
Good sized pink flower heads on a neat compact plant. The propagation of, and or the sale of plant parts is prohibited without a license. Patent / Trademark tag required.
Zone 5, 4-5 ft, gr 0.5,

PURPLE EMPEROR
(B. davidii ‘Pyrkeep’)
Large mauve-purple blooms on a compact, neatly growing shrub. The propagation of, and or the sale of plant parts is prohibited without a license. Patent / Trademark tag required. Zone 5, 4-5 ft, gr 0.5,

 ‘Bicolor’
A cool new selection from Mike Dirr with multicolor blooms. The cover plant for wayside gardens.  Open pollinated seedlings of B. ‘Honeycomb’ resulting in lavender and butterscotch yellow flowers. Most likely it had crossed with buddleia davidii. Quite distinct.
Zone 5, 6-8 ft, gr 0.5,
cut, Full Sun

'Black Knight'

One of the most popular cultivars, although there are better purple selections. Perhaps it's the name people like so much. The blooms are relatively small compared to most but they are a pleasing blackish-purple color. The habit is open and the plant is course. Typical green Buddleia leaves.   AWARDS: AGM

'Ellen's Blue'

This is one great plant! It has perhaps the deepest, truest  blue of any cultivar. The blooms are of good size and held up well and well distributed abound the plant. It has wonderful silver gray foliage too.

‘Guinevere’
A stray seedling discovered by one of Mike Dirr’s student workers, Cindy Burkes...has black-purple, fragrant flowers and dark green leaves. It is an improved ‘Black Knight’ with superior flowers and form. Zone 5, 8-10 ft, gr 0.5,

'Honeycomb'

(B. x weyeriana) This is the best yellow Buddleia we've ever seen. The attractive creamy yellow flowers are clear in color with no purple as you get with 'Sungold'. The blooms are variable with some panicles having globose balls of flowers, and sometimes the blooms are fuller, more typical of Buddleia davidii. Better habit and more refined than 'Sun Gold’. Introduced and named by Mike Dirr after finding this rogue plant in some stock purchased in England as B. 'E. H. Wilson'.

'Lochinch'

Long blooming, soft lavender-blue flowers and showy silver foliage. AWARDS: AGM

'Nanho Blue'

Numerous blue flowers and compact habit. This is not a dwarf plant, it can get up to 6-7 feet tall, but it does have compact branching. AWARDS: PSC

'Nanho Purple'

Numerous, relatively small purple flower heads. A compact, well branched habit, but not dwarf. AWARD: PSC

'Pink Delight'

Pure pink flowers in thick large racemes. Excellent compact growth habit and attractive silver foliage. One of the very best! AWARDS: GCA

'Potters Purple'

Our favorite dark purple. Thick and large violet panicles. A real standout plant.

'Royal Red'

The closest thing to red, but not quite there. Rich purple-red flowers. Very fragrant!

'White Ball'

A Buddleia breakthrough! Tight compact growth and stunning silver foliage make this plant quite unique and very beautiful. Abundant white flowers too.

'White Profusion'

A profusion of big, pure white flowers. Strong blooming and a good habit.
