Ceanothus

New Jersey Tea 

Family: Rhamnaceae

(Ceano-thus: Ancient Greek name)

 

C. x pallidus 'Marie Simon'
A neat, rounded shrub with attractive dark green leaves. Fluffy soft pink, terminal flower heads. Blooms in late spring. Attractive red capsules. A great little gem that deserves wider use.
Zone 6, 2-3 feet, gr 1,

 Cephalanthus occidentalis  ‘Sputnik’
A large flowered, long blooming selection of our native buttonbush. Attractive light pinkish-white spherical flower heads in mid-summer. It has a nice form and glossy
foliage. Best suited for moist to wet soils. Steve Bieberich of Sunshine Nursery found this Buttonbush in a native stand in Oklahoma. Zone 5, 5-12 feet, gr 1,

''Fastigata'

An attractive columnar form that is commonly used in place of Taxus ‘Hicksii’ because it is heat tolerant and deer resistant.  The narrow, soft needles are arranged spirally on the stem presenting a unique textural quality. Zone 5, 5-12 feet, gr 1

(Chaenome-les: Greek compound, split apple, for the fruit was thought to split)

They’re unlike anything we've seen in the West. Rich colors and unique flower with the taste of the Orient.  It’s taken us years to assemble this collection, now we are pleased to share them with you. Supplies are Limited.

‘Chojuraku' Very striking, large double orange flowers. A very unusual color for a quince. Very choice!  Zone 5, 4-5 feet, gr 1.5,

‘Iwai Nishiki’

(C. speciosa) A spectacular spring display of double camellia-like flowers of the deepest red color. The most striking quince ever seen. A low spreading form with exotic appeal. Zone 5, 3-4 feet, gr 1.5,

‘Kan Toyo’

A miniature version of 'Toyo Nishiki' with small half inch pinkish white flowers that are often multi-colored. Prized for bonsai but also great for the garden.  Zone 5, 3-4 feet, gr 1.5,

‘Kingishi’

A medium growing plant large with single orange flowers. Very showy. Zone 5, 4-5 feet, gr 1.5,

‘O Yashima’

Spectacular pure white flowers are large, doubled and very showy. Light up the garden.  Zone 5, 4-6 feet, gr 1.5,

'Toyo-Nishiki'  

(C. speciosa) A rare combination of red, white, and pink flowers compose a rousing floral display. Upright growth habit. Prized in Japan for bonsai, jam making and for its large colorful blooms.

'Cameo'  

(C. x superba) Romantic, fully double, peach colored flowers in May. Very nice.

'Crimson and Gold'  

(C. x superba) The richest, most exciting quince we've ever seen. Large, velvety, crimson red flowers with bright golden stamen and a low spreading habit. A vast improvement in quince!

‘Fusion’

(C. x superba) An arching shrub with bowl shaped scarlet red, flowers appearing in April to May. Free-flowering on 1 year old  shoots. Fruit especially rich in vitamin C.  Selected from seedlings of ´Crimson and Gold´ and brought into trade by H.-J. Albrecht of Berlin in 1987. Zone 5, 4-5 feet, gr 1.5,

'Jet Trail'

(C. speciosa) A white flowering form of Texas Scarlet with a compact spreading habit.

Zone 5, 3-4 feet, gr 1.5, Full Sun Partial Shade

'Texas Scarlet'

(C. speciosa) An old time favorite with bright red flowers in May. Very popular for hedging.

Chamaecyparis

False cypress 

Family: Cupressaceae

(Chamaecyp-aris: Greek for a dwarf or on the ground Cypress)

 'Oregon Blue'

(C. lawsoniana) A narrow columnar selection of Oregon Cedar with attractive blue foliage that gracefully droops at the tips.  Makes an excellent screen or specimen plant.    

Zone 5, 12-20 feet, gr 2, Full Sun Partial Shade shade

'Sullivan'

(C. lawsoniana) A super hardy selection of Oregon Cedar that has its obscure beginnings in the Lake County, Ohio area. This tough, narrow pyramidal evergreen has attractive foliage with weeping tips reminiscent of Eastern hemlock.  Makes an excellent screen or specimen plant.    Zone 5, 12-20 feet, gr 2, Full Sun Partial Shade shade

Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Compacta’  A broad, low conical form that resembles C. ‘Nana Gracilis’ but slightly larger and faster growing. The bright green, evergreen foliage is fan-shaped. Zone 4, 12 feet

obtusa 'Crippsi' 

Golden Fern-leaf False cypress. A small, loosely conical tree with golden fern-like foliage. One of the most elegant small golden conifers. Zone 4, 12 feet, gr 2, Full Sun Partial Shade,  AWARDS: AGM

obtusa 'Filicoides'

An irregular pyramidal conifer with twisted pendulous clusters of bright green fern-like foliage. An excellent specimen plant. Zone 5, 8-12 feet, gr 2, Full Sun Partial Shade

o. 'Filicoides Gold '

Similar to C. 'Filicoides' but with golden yellow foliage. Research indicates this is the same plant as C. 'Tetragona Aurea'. Zone 5, 8-12 feet, gr 2, Full Sun Partial Shade

o. ‘Verdoni’’
A golden selection of dwarf Hinoki Cypress with fine burn resistant foliage and an interesting contorted, narrow, upright shape. Zone 5, 5-8 feet, gr 2,

pisifera 'Filifera Aurea'  

A slow growing mound or squat pyramid with golden thread-like foliage.

Zone 4, 15-20 feet, gr 2, Full Sun Partial Shade.

p. 'Mini Variegated' 

A dwarf round globe with gray green foliage dotted with creamy white variegation.

Zone 4, 30 inches, gr 2, Full Sun Partial Shade

 

p. 'Sungold' 

A slow growing globe or broad pyramid with bright, golden thread-like foliage that does not fade in the summer. Zone 4, 30-36 inches, gr 2, Full Sun Partial Shade

 

 p. 'Vintage Gold' 

A fern-leaf form of 'Gold Mops'. A strong growing golden mound. Fern-like foliage is soft and attractive. The bright yellow foliage hold its color well and does not fade in the summer or winter. A new introduction from Seven Springs Nursery, OH. Zone 4, 18-30 inches, gr 1.5, Full Sun Partial Shade
