Daphne

Daphne

Family: Thymelaceae

(Daph-ne: Greek name for laural)

Summer Ice’

(D. x transatlantica) A free flowering variegated beauty that bares spicy-sweet flowers that start pink and open white. Continuous flushes of blooms from early spring to frost make this plant a dream. Some consider the fragrance is better than lilac. Selected by Robert Ticknor, PhD. now retired from the North Wilamette Research and Extension Center in Oregon Zone 5, 2-3 feet, gr 1

Daphne tangutica

A favorite in our garden, this semi-evergreen shrub delivers fragrant spring flowers and attractive glossy foliage. The rose-purple flower buds unfurl to white with a purple throat. The blooms last from early spring to mid-summer with an occasional rebloom thereafter. Attractive orange-red fruits. Zone 6, 2-3 feet, gr 1

Deutzia

Deutzia

Family: Saxifragaceae

(Deu-tzia: after Johann van der Deutz, 1743-1784, patron of Thunberg)

CHARDONNAY PEARLS™
(D. gracilis. ‘Duncan’ ppaf, Canadian BRAF)

Attractive, crisp, lime-yellow foliage provides season long garden color long after the pure white, pearl-like buds explode into a shower of fragrant spring time flowers. An attractive compact shrub with lots of impulse appeal. Great for the perennial garden or shrub border. The propagation of, and or the sale of plant parts is prohibited without a license. Patent /
Trademark tag required. Zone 5, 20-36 inches, gr 1, full sun -partial shade

'Nikko'

(D. gracilis) One of the most useful and beautiful landscape plants ever developed. A graceful, low spreading gem with abundant white flowers and attractive, burgundy fall color. It makes a first class ground cover! FIRST CHOICE AWARD '94. AWARDS: PSC, GMPA

Zone 5, 12-24 inches, gr 1, Full Sun

'Magicien'

(D. x hybrida) A breathtaking show of large, pink and white striped flowers. Wow! A 1925 Lemoine hybrid which has stood the test of time.

'Pink Minor'

A dwarf, arching Deutzia with copious, delicate light pink flowers and charming green foliage. Its origin is uncertain; perhaps Duncan & Davies.

Zone 5, 24-30 inches, gr 1, Full Sun

'Rosealind'

(D. x elegantissima) An award winning spring beauty with masses of lightly fragrant, rich carmine-pink flowers. A recent arrival from France. We really like it. Blooms when customers are in the store! AWARDS: AGM Zone 5, 4-6 feet, gr 1, Full Sun

Diervilla

Bush Honeysuckle

Family: Caprifoliaceae

(Diervil-la: after N. Dierville, a French surgeon and plantsman)

Diervilla is an interesting genus that was once grouped in as Weigela. It has similar leaves but in many respects the foliage is nicer, and Diervilla has smaller, yellow flowers.  While this plant will never be a big hit in a garden center, landscapers really should get to know this workhorse. It's a tough plant that is adaptable to difficult locations. It can be used much as Rhus a. 'Low-Gro'.

'Butterfly'

(D. sessilifolia) A new long blooming Dutch selection with rich yellow flowers held in upright clusters from May to July. The foliage is bright green and clean. The habit is neat, well branched and not floppy like other species. Adaptable to dry shady locations. A wonderful selection by Pieter Zwijnenburg.

Zone 4, 3-5 feet, gr 1, Full Sun Partial Shade Shade

'Copper'

(D. lonicera) Copper-red new growth is an added dimension to this tough native. A superior plant to D. x splendens. Yellow flowers in mid-summer. Great for dry sites.

Zone 3, 2-3 feet, gr 1, Full Sun Partial Shade Shade

lonicera

A compact, spreading form with yellow flowers in mid-summer. Great for dry sites. FIRST CHOICE AWARD '94.

Zone 3, 3 feet, gr 1, Full Sun Partial Shade Shade, AWARDS: PSC
