Forsythia

Forsythia 

Family: Oleaceae (For-syth-ia: after William Forsyth, 1737-1800, English horticulturist)

CITRUS SWIZZLE 

(F. viridissima ‘McKCitrine’ pp#16,464)

A showy golden variegated sport of F. ‘Bronxensis’. Soft yellow flowers in early spring and burgundy-red fall foliage color. Discovered by Dan Moore of McKay’s Nursery in Waterloo, WI. The propagation of, and or the sale of plant parts is prohibited without a license. Patent/trademark tag required.       Zone 5, 18-24 inches, gr 1

'Fiesta' 

Festive yellow and green variegated leaves and red stems create a big splash. Oh yes, it flowers too. Introduced by Duncan & Davies of New Zealand. Zone 5, 6-8 feet, gr 1, Cut Branch, Full Sun

 

 GOLDEN PEEP   

 (F. x int. 'Courdijau' PPAF) New from France, Golden Peep is a ball of gold in the spring, blooming from top to bottom. Not only is it dwarf, it also has excellent compact branching. Great container presentation as a young plant, blooming on one year wood. Available June. Zone 5, 18-30 inches, gr 1 Full Sun

   

‘Golden Times’ The most attractive of all the variegated forsythias. Large, brightly variegated gold and green leaves make this forsythia attractive all season long. As with some variegated plants you will need to remove any rogue reversions. Zone 5, 6-8 feet (NO LONGER OFFERED)

 GOLDILOCKS  

 (F. x int. 'Courtacour', PPAF) Unlike anything ever seen in Forsythia. The bright yellow flowers line the stems giving the plant the appearance of Liatris spikes but only in bright yellow!  Good growth, but not excessive. From France.

'Kumson'

(F. viridissima koreana) A unique new variegated forsythia that we discovered in Korea. Dark green leaves are accented with an attractive network of silver veins. Typical forsythia flowers and with an upright arching habit. Available June

'Lynwood'

'New Hampshire Gold'

Our favorite full sized Forsythia! A finely branched, compact ball of gold. Flower hardy to -35oF. Attractive red-purple fall color. Superior in flower and in habit! Hybridized by the late Paul Joly of Windsor Road Nursery, NH.

'Suwan Gold'

(F. viridissima koreana) A new Korean selection with vivid yellow leaves. Clear yellow flowers adorn this arching plant in early spring. Excellent in partial shade.

WEEK END

(F. x 'Courtalyn') PPAF) A SUPER HERO MUTANT! 'Lynwood' radiated and mutated with gamma rays. It has the same abundant large flowers but without the wild branches. Weekend is also more compact with a size two thirds the height of Lynwood. The flowers are distributed over the entire plant and open several weeks later than normal. Oh, the wonder of gamma rays. New from France.

Fothergilla

Bottlebrush 

Family: Hamamelidaceae

(Fother-gil-a: after John Fothergill, English physician who introduced many plants into cultivation)

F. gardenii

A small refined shrub with fragrant, white bottlebrush-like flowers appearing prior to the leaves. Exceptionally brilliant orange, red and yellow fall color. AWARDS: PSC

Zone 5, 2-4 feet, Fragrant, gr 2, Full Sun Partial Shade, moist soils essential.  

F. major

A classic beauty noted for its fragrant, white bottlebrush-like flowers and brilliant orange, red and yellow fall color. This plant deserves greater use, because it delivers everything you expect from F. gardenii but on a larger scale Available June

Zone 5, 4-5 feet, Fragrant, gr 2, Full Sun Partial Shade

F. x intermedia 'Blue Shadow'

A new, strong growing selection with silvery-blue foliage. Fragrant, white bottlebrush-like flowers and brilliant orange, red and yellow fall color. This plant is far superior to 'Blue Mist' which is considered a very weak and temperamental variety. From Gary Handy of Handy Nursery, OR.

F. x intermedia 'Mount Airy'

A vigorous plant with abundant white flowers, and dark green foliage. Consistent yellow-orange-red fall color. Selected by Mike Dirr at the Mt. Airy Arboretum. AWARDS: GRA

F. monticola

Similar to Fothergilla major but with silver on the undersides  of the leaves. Most people  consider this a subspecies of F. major. Fragrant bottlebrush flowers and fantastic orange - red autumn colors.

(Gen-ist-a: ancient Latin name, tinc-toria: of dyes) 

BANGLE™ 

A profusion of bright yellow flowers drape this low arching beauty in May and June. Attractive green stems. Proven to be hardy Adaptable to poor dry soils. Thrives in heat. Available June

Zone 4, 2 feet, gr 1.5, Full Sun 

‘Flore-Plena’ (G. tinctoria)  

Loaded with double yellow flowers from mid-summer to early fall this plant is a sight to behold. Great for perennial gardens, rock gardens and the front of the border. Very adaptable to drought conditions. Awards: AGM.  Zone 4, 12-18 inches, gr 1.5

'Royal Gold'

(G. tinctoria) Rich yellow, pea-like flowers embellish this small, free flowering shrub with bright green stems. Adaptable to poor dry soils and thrives in heat.
