Hydrangea

The Japanese Style Hydrangea Collection

Family: Hydrangaceae

Zone 5, 3-5 feet, gr 1,  Full Sun Partial Shade

‘Amagi-Amacha’ (serrata)An elegant plant with narrow, bamboo-like leaves and flat, white lace-cap blooms. Individual sepals are uniquely elongated. We like this plant for the foliage as much as for its flowers. Limited supply.

‘Chishima’ (serrata) Often mistakenly sold as ‘Shashiva’ this a beauty regardless of the name. Flat lace-cap blooms encircled with large, light pink, round sterile flowers. The inner fertile blooms are relatively large and a deeper pink to create a wonderful contrast. Very fine! Limited supply.  (NO LONGER SOLD)

‘Claudie’ (H. Macrophylla ppaf, Canadian BRAF)
A remarkable woman deserves a remarkable (and beautiful) plant. Hydrangea 'Claude' pays
tribute to French astronaut Claudie Andre-Deshays. Like ‘stars in the night’, rich blue, starry florets with unique with well separated sepals orbit numerous, large, deep blue fertile flowers. Developed and named by the world famous French hydrangea expert Corinne Mallet. The propagation of, and or the sale of plant parts is prohibited without a license. Patent / Trademark tag required.

 'Izu No Hana'

(macrophylla) Translates to “Flowers of the Izu peninsula,”  but to me, it translates into an explosion of fireworks. The unique lace-cap flowers are comprised of a mass of showy, large, pink flowers, with even larger, pink, doubled sterile florets shooting out in various directions. Each floret contains 14 to 16 sepals compared to the customary 4. Dark glossy leaves. A remarkable plant. Available June. Limited Supply

'Jogasaki'

(macrophylla) Named after a town in the Izu peninsula of Japan, Jojasaki is yet another lace-cap with double florets. The silvery-pink florets contain 8 to 11 rounded sepals, and appear as miniature pink water lilies floating a top a pond. Available June. Limited Supply

 'Kiyosumi'

(serrata) A fine featured plant that resembles Coleus with its attractive deep red flushes of new growth. Delicate lacy flowers. Pure white sepals, often developing a red margin. Discovered by Yasaka Hayasha on Mt. Kiyosumi. Available June. Limited Supply

‘Komachi’  This is the same plant that has been misnamed ‘Pretty Maiden. Stunning, irregular mop-head blooms with elongated, pink doubled flowers. Flower color ranges from clear blue to soft pink depending upon pH. The plant is a compact 3-4’ in height.  (NO LONGER SOLD)

 'Midoriboshi-Temari'

(serrata) An elegant plant in stature and in flower. A Prolific bloomer with unique lacy pink blooms. The outer ring of doubled florets dance on long pedicles like ballerinas. Available June. Limited Supply

 'Miranda'

(H. serrata) A robust, showy plant with big, dome shaped lace-cap blooms of clear pink or clear blue (depending upon pH).  The large cluster of fertile flowers is bright and just as attractive as the larger, outer florets.

 'Miyama-yae-Muraski'

(H. serrata) A spectacular and majestic plant discovered by Mr. Takeshi Seto in Miyama, Kyoto Japan in 1950. It took fifty years for us to get it, but well worth the wait. The sterile florets are very double with egg-shaped sepals ranging in color between violet and pink. The foliage is a very bright green.

‘Mousmee’

(H. macrophylla) A Japanese selection meaning girl, and what a beautiful girl she is! Big, purplish-pink lace-cap blooms accentuated with blue fertile flowers in the center. Quite remarkable. (NO LONGER SOLD)

‘Shamrock’
(H. Macrophylla ppaf, Canadian BRAF) A cool new Hydrangea in the Japanese tradition with masses of large, doubled, pink lace-cap flowers. Flowering begins in July and as the season progresses they transform into breathtaking shades of red and deep pink. On acid soils the flowers are more violet. Very floriferous and long blooming. More compact and tends to be more frost resistant than most Japanese types. Developed by the world famous French hydrangea expert Corinne Mallet. This superb new plant pays tribute to Association des amis de la Collections D'Hydrangea Shamrock (French Hydrangea Society) and a portion of the royalties are used to support their Hydrangea collection near Dieppe in Upper Normandy. The propagation of, and or the sale of plant parts is prohibited without a license. Patent / Trademark tag required. Zone 4, 3.5-5 feet, gr 1, full sun - partial shade

‘Shirofuji’  A fantastic Hydrangea serrata that shines in the garden compared to most other Hydrangea because of it low mounded habit and abundance of flowers. The name translates to snow-capped Mt. Fuji, and with good reason. When in bloom the entire plants covered with delicate, double white, snowflake-like flowers.
