Hydrangea serrata

Sawtooth  Hydrangea 

Family: Hydrangaceae

(serrat-a: saw toothed)

 

The big wave in Hydrangea! Refined plants closely related to H. macrophylla. Native to the mountains of Japan and Korea, thus adapted to colder climates. Fall color is another feature of this plant.

Zone 5, 4-5 feet, gr 0.5, Cut Branch, Fcicon Partial Shade

'Beni-gaku'

Extremely graceful plant with free flowering white lace cape flowers. The outer flowers become blushed with red to create a beautiful color combination. Dries a burgundy red! AWARDS: AGM (NO LONGER OFFERED)

 

'Blue Billow'

A low spreading form with blue lace-cap flowers age to deep pink. Considered very hardy because it originated from seed collected in the Korean mountains. A must have Hydrangea! AWARDS: PGMA

'Blue Bird'

Long blooming, robust selection with deep blue fertile flowers surrounded by pale blue sterile florets. The leaves turn a superb copper-red fall color. AWARDS: AGM

'Blue Deckle'  

Electric blue lacy flowers in acid soil, luminous pink in neutral soils. Midway between a lace cap and mopheads. Serrated sterile florets are numerous and surrounded by pale blue sterile florets. (NO LONGER OFFERED)

'Coerulea Lace'

From what we've seen, this is our most reliable Hydrangea. Large fleecy light blue flowers are very showy and long lasting. As an added bonus, it has hot pink fall color!

'Preziosa' Blushed pink, snowball flowers and green leaves gradually become stained with hues of pink and red. AWARDS: AGM

Hardy Hydrangea 

Family: Hydrangaceae  

'Grandiflora' 

Pee Gee Hydrangea is an outdated, floppy plant with big white blooms which fade to pink. Train into a tree or grow as a shrub. Improved varieties are listed below.

Zone 4, 8-12 feet, gr 1,  Full Sun - partial shade (NO LONGER OFFERED)

'Kyushu'

One of our favorites. Large lacy white flowers are held erect from July through September. Preferred over 'Tardiva'  because it blooms early and at a very young age. Attractive glossy foliage. Collected on the Island of Kyushu. Zone 4, 6-8 feet, gr 1, Cut Branch, Full Sun - partial shad (NO LONGER OFFERED)

LIMELIGHT 

(Hydrangea paniculata 'Limlight' PPAF)

 

An extraordinary new Hydrangea with exquisite bright lime-green flowers. The color is breathtakingly beautiful, and adds much needed color to the late summer landscape. Excellent vigor and floriferous blooming, Limelight presents itself well in a container and is certain to be a hit at retail. Hybridized by the noted plantsman Pieter Zwijnenburg Jr.    Zone 4, 6-8 feet, gr 1,  Full Sun - partial shade

‘Little Lamb’ ppaf A special compact plant with the most delicate flowers ever seen on a Hydrangea paniculata. The flowers are sterile like a Pee Gee but only much smaller and forming smaller panicles that look like little lambs dancing above the foliage. Hybridized by the famous plantswoman Jelena DeBelder of Belgium. Zone 4, 4-5 feet Full Sun - partial shade

'Pink Diamond'

A large flowered selection with broad 12" by 8" conical lacy blooms. Extremely large white florets transform to a rich pink not seen in other selections. Flowers are held distinctly upright. Degree of coloration is dependent upon climate. Introduced by the De Belders of Belgium. FIRST CHOICE AWARD '96. Zone 4, 6-8 feet, gr 1,  Full Sun - partial shade

PINKY WINKY™  

(H. ‘DVPinky’, ppaf)

A real winner, this new Hydrangea from Belgium has indeterminate flowers. This means that the flower heads keep sending up new white flowers from the tip even while the older blooms at the base are turning a deep pink. The effect is a beautiful two toned flower unique to this plant alone. Strong upright stems.  Zone 4, 6-8 feet, Full Sun - partial shade

 

QUICK FIRE  

(H. ‘Bulk’, ppaf) A breakthrough plant that blooms more than a month earlier than other varieties. For us it blooms in late May - early June and turns to a rich deep pink before Pink Diamond even begins to show flowers. Breed by noted plantsman Mark Bulk, Boskoop Netherlands. The propagation of, and or the sale of plant parts is prohibited without a license. Patent/trademark tag required. Zone 4, 6-8 feet, gr 1, Full Sun - partial shade

'Tardiva'

A heavy stemmed, late blooming selection with large lacy flower heads. AWARDS: AGM, PSC

 The Swanä

( H. ‘Barbara’, PPAF) A remarkable new Hydrangea hybridized Jelena De Belder of Belgium. Pure white florets grow as large as the palm of your hand! Extremely distinct and desirable. Grow as a shrub or as a tree. Great for drying! It takes a few years to mature and look its best.

Zone 4, 6-8 feet, gr 1, Cut Branch, Full Sun - partial shade

'Unique'

An early blooming selection with enormous, rounded conical, white blossoms with large sepals. Turns a pleasing pink with age. Selected by the De Belders of Belgium. One of the best!

Oakleaf Hydrangea

(Querci-folia: Latin for Oak - leafed)

Hydrangea quercifolia

Oakleaf Hydrangea has large, 8"-12"  white panicles that appear in late June and fade to pink. Oak-like leaves turn a divine wine in autumn. Available May. AWARDS: AGM, PSC NATIVE: North America. Zone 5, 6-10 feet, gr 1, Full Sun Partial Shade

'Alice'

Strong growing selection by Mike Dirr with large 12 " white panicles. Dark green foliage and burgundy fall color. Available May. FIRST CHOICE AWARD '98 Zone 5, 6-10 feet, gr 1, Full Sun Partial Shade   NATIVE: North America.

 

 

 ‘Little Honey’ A distinctive new oakleaf with bright golden-yellow foliage. A branch sport of the dwarf selection ‘Pee Wee’.  The foliage emerges gold and then changes to a pleasing chartreuse as the season progresses. Brilliant red autumn foliage. Discovered by Peter Catt of the UK.  NATIVE: North America.

‘Pee Wee’ A very desirable dwarf selection a low mounded habit. Abundant white flower heads in early to mid-summer. Excellent wine red autumn foliage color. May burn in full sun. Great for smaller gardens. Introduced by Aldridge  Nursery, Birmingham, Alabama.  NATIVE: North America. Zone 5, 3-4 feet  

 'Sikes Dwarf'

A dwarf selection with handsome, closely spaced foliage and numerous white flower heads. Great for smaller gardens. Discovered by Sarah Sikes. Zone 5, 3-4 feet, Full Sun Partial Shade NATIVE: North America.

‘Snowflake’
Huge pendulous blooms with doubled flowers. Flowers open white, while the older sepals turn dark purple-pink to create a unique show. A graceful weeping habit and wonderful burgundy-red
fall color. Discovered by Eddy Aldridge. Available May. NATIVE: North America. Zone 5, 3-4 feet, Full Sun Partial Shade

'Snow Queen'

Large, tightly packed, pure white panicles are held upright to create a unique summer flower display. The flowers fade to light pink and the leathery leaves turn a superb burgundy autumn color. Selected by William Flemer, III. Available May. AWARDS: GMPA, PSC

Zone 5, 7-10 feet, Full Sun Partial Shade NATIVE: North America.
