Sambucus

Elderberry

Family: Caprifoliaceae

(Sambu-cus: old Latin name for Elder)

Sambucus is a surprising group of plants that have many bold and beautiful cultivars. This list is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to interesting selections. We have many selections in development and will be expanding our offerings within the near future. If you want to dig deeper, Click Here to Learn More!

'Aurea'

(S. canadensis) Lime yellow foliage and a broad rounded habit. This rapid grower thrives in moist soil. For more information on ornamental elderberry see the March 1999 issue of NMPro. Zone 3, 8-10 feet, Fragrant, gr 0.5, Full Sun Partial Shade    (Discontinued)

 'Aureomarginata'

(S. nigra) A healthy growing plant with attractive variegated leaves adorned with a bright yellow margin. Thrives in moist soil but is thoroughly adaptable to all but droughty soils. For more information on ornamental elderberry see the March 1999 issue of NMPro. Zone 4, 8-10 feet, Fragrant, gr 0.5, Full Sun Partial Shade     (Discontinued)

BLACK BEAUTY

(S. nigra 'Gerda’ ppaf) It’s finally here - the plant sensation of Europe is available in America. Black Beauty is a breakthrough plant with intriguing dark black foliage. Not only does this plant make ‘Guincho Purple’ extinct, but it totally changes your perception of Sambucus. The leaf color does not fade to green in summer, but actually gets darker. Loads of lemon scented, rich pink flowers in late June – early July that contrast wonderfully with the foliage. Grow it as a shrub, or cut it back each year and use it as a bold perennial. Tons of impulse appeal! Developed by Ken Tobutt and Jacqui Prevette of the HRI - East Malling Research Station in England. Propagation is restricted.

Zone 4, 8-12 feet, Fragrant, gr 0.5, Full Sun Partial Shade

BLACK LACE

(S. nigra 'Eva’ ppaf) Its intriguing dark foliage is finely cut like that of Japanese maple.  But Black Lace is adaptable to most growing conditions and hardy all the way to Zone 4, making it a better choice than Japanese maple for many areas.  Plant it in the perennial border or use it as a dramatic accent in the general landscape.  Season-long impulse appeal at retail and its easy growing nature will make Black Lace a hit in 2006.  A limited supply will be available for Spring 2006 shipping.  Locate a Licensed Grower on-line at www.colorchoiceplants.com. Developed by Ken Tobutt and Jacqui Prevette of the HRI - East Malling Research Station in England. Propagation is restricted.

Zone 4, 8-12 feet, Fragrant, gr 0.5, Full Sun Partial Shade

Zone 4, 8-10 feet, Fragrant, gr 0.5, Full Sun Partial Shade    (Discontinued)

'Pulverulenta'

(S. nigra) It looks like it’s continuously in flower, but don’t be fooled - It’s the foliage! Bright white, mottled leaves can light up a garden. It is not as big or aggressive growing as other elderberries.

Zone 4, 5-10 feet, Fragrant, gr 0.5, Full Sun Partial Shade    (Discontinued)

‘Pyramadalis’
(S. nigra) It’s so ugly it’s cool. Think of it as hardy, thornless saguaro cactus like you see in the old westerns. A great architectural garden feature and converstion piece. Large white flowers in early summer add to the charm. You're going to love it.
Zone 5, 10 by 2 feet, gr 0.5,
   (Discontinued)

 'Sutherland Gold'

(S. racemosa) We are pleased to finally offer this wonderful plant. Beautiful, deeply cut, golden foliage and a graceful habit. Even though it’s said to be more resistant to leaf burn than 'Plumosa Aurea', it will look its best in partial shade. It also holds it’s color better than other yellow cultivars. The new spring growth is a beautiful copper-red. Available June

Zone 3, 5-10 feet, Fragrant, gr 0.5, Full Sun Partial Shade
