Spiraea japonica

Family: Rosaceae

(Spirae-a: Greek meaning wreath)

'Albiflora' 

Japanese White Spirea. A dense, rounded, low shrub with a profusion of lacy white flowers and bright green foliage. A good choice for foundation plantings or even the perennial garden.

'Alpine'

A dwarf, compact plant with small blue-green leaves and dainty, pink, powder puff flowers. An excellent landscape plant that combines well with other plants. AWARDS: AGM, PSC

'Anthony Waterer'

Deep rose-red flowers appear in June on this dense mounding shrub. Normal AW strains produce disfiguring albino shoots due to a virus but our new SAPPO strain does not. For improved selections see Neon Flash and Dart's Red listed below. AWARDS: AGM

'Candle Light'

'Crispa'

Crinkled and twisted, dark green and reddish leaves. Typical pink spirea flowers. A nice texture plant.

DAKOTA GOLDCHARM â  

(S. 'Mertyann') A dwarf, gold leafed spirea with bronze tips and pink flowers. An outstanding plant for the front of the border or even the perennial garden! FIRST CHOICE AWARD '96. Zone 4, 12-15 inches, gr 1, Full Sun

'Darts Red'

Deep carmine-red flowers fade to a pleasing pink. Similar to Anthony Waterer in color and form, but does not produce the albino shoots. Selected by Darthuizer Nursery. Zone 4, 2-3 feet, gr 1, Full Sun

decumbens 

A dwarf, compact, prostrate spreading plant that is useful for many landscape applications. Frothy white flowers cover this plant from June to September. Excellent as a ground cover, in the perennial garden or in the front of the border. A superb plant!

densiflora 

A small, West Coast native found in moist locations in low mountainous areas. A well behaved, extensively branched shrub that spreads by rhizomes. Dense, dark green foliage is dotted with rich pink blooms in June. An excellent plant for butterflies.

'Fire Light'

An improved Goldflame, with deeper orange spring growth and fiery red fall color. Will not revert to green like Goldflame can. Deep pink flowers and compact mounded habit. New from England.

'Froebelii'

'Goldflame'

'Gold Mound'

Bright gold foliage, pink flowers, and a low mounding form. Introduced by W.H. Perron Nursery.

'Lemon Princess'

One of our favorites! Brighter than 'Gold Mound' and the color holds up much better during the summer. A compact mounded plant. If you don't grow this plant, try a few trays and compare it to Gold Mound. The difference is striking.

'Little Princess'

Alpine Spirea on steroids! Larger leaves, faster growth and abundant pink flowers, yet still more compact than other cultivars. AWARDS: PSC

'Macrophylla'   

Large bold, convex leaves are bright green to near yellow with attractive reddish-purple new growth. In autumn the leaves are splashed with blotches of red which eventually meld together. Hilliers calls it the best spirea for fall color and we agree. Pink flowers in late spring.

'Magic Carpet'  

(PP# 9363) A dwarf spirea with vibrant red leaf tips above a backdrop of bright gold foliage. Add pinkish-purple flowers in summer and you have season long interest. Use it as a groundcover!

'Neon Flash'   

Still growing Anthony Water? Get with it! Neon has vivid red flowers, rich purple-green new growth and no albino shoots like you get with A.W. Discovered in the wild by Shigeo Suzik of Angyo, Japan. Long blooming. Introduced  by Brookside Gardens. FIRST CHOICE AWARD '95.

'Norman'

A very fine, semi-dwarf, upright mound with rosy pink flowers and raspberry red fall color. A 'Froebelii' x 'Little Princess' cross that makes a great little hedge or low foundation plant.

PINK PARASOLS     A unique ground covering Spiraea

 (S. fritschiana 'Wilma’ ppaf ) It’s Pink! Spiraea fritschiana in a new color. Big, fluffy, umbrella-like blooms cover this mounded shrub in June. Bluish-green leaves turn a nice yellow- orange color in autumn. Great for massing. Selected by Tim Wood. Propagation is restricted.

'Shirobana'    

(syn. S. j. 'Shirobi') Pink and white flowers on the same plant make this a great garden center impulse plant. Like most Japanese spirea, it will rebloom throughout  the summer if you remove the spent flowers.

SNOW STORM  

 (S. media ‘Darsnorm' ) Until now this species has been little known outside of the Europe Eastern block. Snowstorm is a superb Darthuizer selection of Spirea media has an abundance of large white blooms in April and May. In bloom it’s literally a snow storm. Nice compact branching habit. Excellent in mass! Propagation is restricted.

betulifolia 'Tor'   

A sleeping beauty! A multitude of tightly packed, white flower clusters against a backdrop of iridescent green leaves. Compact, rounded habit, and exceptional purple autumn color add to this plant's allure! Blooms in mid to late spring. A Scandinavian selection. FIRST CHOICE AWARD '98.

cinerea ‘Grefsheim’

This hardy Norwegian hybrid is probably the first Spiraea to flower, clothed in abundant sprays white blossoms along its thin arching stems in late April. It has fantastic texture. AWARDS: AGM. Zone 3, 4-6 feet, gr 1,

 nipponica 'Snowmound'

Dense rounded plant with deep green foliage and masses of white flowers. Discovered on the island of Shikoku, Japan. Introduced by the Royal Botanical Garden in Ontario, Canada. AWARDS: PSC Zone 4, 4-6 feet, gr 1, Full Sun

thunbergii 'Fujino Pink'

A beautiful, fine branched spirea that sports masses of light pink flowers in early spring before the leaves emerge. A soft, airy plant that looks great in mass.

thunbergii 'Mt. Fuji'  

We first learned of this beautiful, soft, variegated shrub while visiting Heronswood Nursery. It caught our eye right away. It took us three years to acquire a few mother plants, but it was worth the wait. The foliage is fine, like small willow leaves with a  white stripe down the length of the blade. White flowers appear in early spring.

thunbergii 'Ogon' A beautiful Japanese selection with bright yellow, small willow-like leaves. This fine textured shrub shines all season long and echoes nicely with yellow flowered perennials such as Coreopsis. Attractive white flowers appear in early spring. The fall color is bronze. Zone 4, 3-4 feet gr 1, Full Sun

x ‘Vanhouttei’ 

What would spring be without the magical appearance of this old time favorite bridal wreath? Developed by Billard of France in 1862 and still one of the best in the entire genus today!

x 'Renaissance' 

An improved version of our grandmother's favorite. Claimed to have mildew and rust resistant foliage. A Bailey Nursery introduction.
